WHAT WE DO

We provide a compassionate, loving community where families of prisoners can begin to thrive!

Mentoring – The most common factor in the success of an at-risk youth is a positive relationship with a caring adult. Our weekly one-on-one mentoring program provides children of prisoners with a positive adult relationship where they can ask questions, receive encouragement, learn skills, and grow.

After-school Programs  – Our after-school program is a cross between camp and one-on-one mentoring. Students are brought out to camp where they enjoy character lessons, activities and group games, and one-on-one mentoring times. Mentors and students also enjoy a meal together and have the opportunity to work on homework.

Family Retreats – These special retreats are uniquely designed for moms, grandmothers, and other caregivers who are raising children with a parent in prison. While the kids enjoy their normal camp activities, the moms enjoy breakfast in bed, art class, a spa night, going horseback riding (for most this was their first time on a horse), and group sessions. Moms value being able to process pain and frustrations with a group of women who really understand.

Summer Camp –  Our summer camp program is uniquely designed to address many of the different challenges children of prisoners face. Activities includes horse riding, archery,  Bible lessons, field games, swimming and many other camp activities.  We also talk about incarceration and give campers tools to succeed during this challenging time in their lives.

Creating  Leaders – CDO provides a great place for young leaders to grow. Not only are children of prisoners and their families healing and growing, but CDO creates a special setting where young and old can serve and grow in their Leadership skills. In the summer of 2016, CDO had over 140 volunteers. Over 20% were former campers serving on staff. Their growth both in their ability to work hard, lead, and serve and the overall impact on their lives was amazing.  Camp provides a place for our families to give back which builds their joy center and helps them realize their value.
